Tom Childerhouse
Background
Tom is a researcher in the field of machining science working with The University of Sheffield’s Department of Materials Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).
His research is centred on developing inline non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for microstructural characterisation of workpiece materials during machining operations. This work involves analysis of the cutting force response of a workpiece during machining to determine microstructural features such as grain size, strain history, and crystallographic texture.
The techniques he is developing can also provide valuable NDE information on tool performance and component surface integrity.
Prior to his work as a PDRA, Tom undertook an EngD research project working with partners at Seco Tools and Element Six working on the development of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) cutting tool materials for titanium alloy machining applications.
